World Peace for the 21st Century

Our Earth and we all living beings are the beautiful creation of the Almighty. We must be thankful to Him for giving us this valuable life to live and for many more. He might have created this world full of virtues, merits, happiness and peace. He might have dreamt of making this world more beautiful than His heaven. But human beings have harboured only the evils of jealousy, hatred instead of love and kindness. Today's world is full of vices and evils. Due to this, His hope and dreams must have been shattered along with the tears of grief.

The world has experienced two devastating world wars and has escaped from the third world war with great difficulty. Due to the craze of excessive power and extension of territory these horrible world wars had accused with human blood-shed. The bombardment in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and other different places caused a heavy loss of wealth and lives. In these wars, many mothers lost their sons, many sisters lost their brothers, many wives lost their husbands, and many kith and kins were killed leaving large numbers of parentless and homeless children.

The green grasslands turned into sandy deserts. The sparkling rivers were changed into red oceans of blood. The trees blooming with beautiful flowers were turned into ashes. In this way the happiness of the earth was looted.

We knew that after every no-moon day there comes a full-moon day, after every dark night there comes a bright day. In the similar way, after two violent wars there was an establishment of UNO (United Nations Organization) to maintain peace and international understanding. In the assistance of UNO, the world regained peace and harmony. The people could smile with the tears of happiness in their eyes. The sandy deserts slowly turned into beautiful gardens with blooming flowers. There was the end of hostility, jealousy and evils. The world was once again full of peace, happiness and virtues. This has proved that the truth always gets victory against false, the good always gets success against evils.

However even today, the world suffers from war-threat. The wars between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, the political tensions between Iraq and Kuwait, Israel and Palestine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, political unrest in Africa etc have threatened the world peace. Following the Einstein's Theory E=MC , these countries have invented and stored numerous deadly weapons which may destroy the whole creation within a short period of time. Therefore, to preserve the whole creation, there is the need of peaceful settlement through mutual understanding. For this not only UNO or individual nation should be engaged but each and every nation should be responsible.

Due to these political reasons, if the third world war breaks out, then imagine what will be the condition of the world? What will the condition of the world? What will the consequences of this war? What effects will it bring?

Oh! It is too horrible to imagine. It will be more violent and destructive than those two world wars. It will cause tremendous loss of human lives. It will destroy the whole civilization in the world. Therefore, it is our responsibility to promote peace and preserve the world from the scourge of war.

Among the peace loving countries, Nepal is also one. It has been declared as a Zone of Peace by King Birendra Bir Bikram Shaha Dev and many countries have accepted it. From the time immemorial, Nepal has been contributing for the promotion of world peace. Nepal believes in the five holy principles of "Panchasheel" - non-interference, non-alignment, peaceful co-existence, friendship and peaceful settlement. Nepal does not interfere or align with other countries for war but it tries to foster the friendly relationship through peace and harmony.

Accordingly, our King Birendra also states that "we adhere to the policy of non-alignment because we believe that it brightens the prospects of peace." So, we all Nepalese follow and respect this policy and try to strengthen the peace.

Nepal is known for its gallant Gurkhas. But they no longer fight for the territorial extension. They rather fight for peace. Nepal sends its army and police to UN peace keeping force. Recently, the Gurkhas army fought bravely in Kargil and Kosovo.

These are the steps taken by Nepal for promotion of world peace. If the small and developing country like Nepal can work for peace, why can other big and developed countries not? If they do so, surely the world will be free from violent wars and other evils. We will find the birds of peace flying over the earth.

Nepal is the birth place of Lord Gautam Buddha who is known as the light of Asia. His lessons of non-violence, peace, humanity and brotherhood are deep rooted in every Nepalese heart. He is the source of inspiration for us. His teachings are the path to attain peace, cultivate wisdom and enlightenment. His life inspires us for peace and spread the feelings of brotherhood and friendship all over the world.

He said that the service to humanity is the service to God. We should treat our enemies with love and forgive them. This concept of forgiveness, kindness and love helps to establish peace in the world.

Therefore, we can say that the aim of a religion is to promote brotherhood and peace. Different religions have described peace in different ways but the target is the same. There are numerous spiritual readers in the world but they preach the same thing. So we have to realize that the real wealth of the world is peace. The progress of the world is possible only if there is peace.

So, viewing all these aspects, I have concluded that the greatest property of our world is the peace. Peace is the fragrance of flower which extends the feelings of brotherhood, co-operation and friendship. Peace is the brightness of the moon which removes the darkness of misunderstanding, conflicts and enmity.

Today, in the new millennium, the desire of every human being is to preserve peace in the world. So let us follow the paths and lessons preached by Lord Buddha. Let us eradicate the feeling of hostility from our soul and embrace the friendship. Let us be united to make the world a garden full of peace-blossoms more beautiful than ever. Only then His creation will be successful. We will find Him smiling with the tears of happiness in His eyes.
